Gaming is a rapidly growing industry, with millions of new gamers ready to play what they like. This should not come as a surprise because many of the world’s biggest companies are involved in it one way or another, especially in recent years.
According to data from Nostrabet.com, Sony has earned $26.6 billion in revenue. The company is behind the popular PlayStation gaming console and owns a separate company called Sony Interactive Entertainment, which organizes events and manages other parts of the business.
The company also owns a number of game studios. Bungie, for instance, was acquired in 2022 and is responsible for creating some of the best PS games ever made.
Even though Sony has posted impressive results for fiscal year 2023, other companies have done well as well. We’ll go over all of them, but keep in mind that many experts predict 2024 will be an even better year for gaming. This means that some of the stats you are about to see will most likely increase, especially for some companies.
Tencent – $24.8B
Sony may be at the top of the 2022 chart, but if we look at the data, Tencent is close behind. The Chinese company is actually one of the biggest names in gaming. Many sources claim it is the largest brand in the video game business if we look at its investments.
Tencent Games is a sub-division of Tencent, the Chinese tech giant that also owns WeChat and QQ. The brand publishes a wide range of titles, including League of Legends and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. It also develops AI and automation software, as well as search engines used in China. In fiscal 2022, Tencent’s gaming division generated $24.8B in revenue.
Tencent started in 1998 and has grown to become one of China’s biggest brands, as well as internationally. In 2018, the company’s market value was over $500B, which is really impressive.
It’s no mystery that Tencent has purchased tons of game studios. For example, the Chinese tech giant bought Supercell for $8.6B in 2016. It’s responsible for Clash of Clans and other popular mobile games.
Microsoft – $16.2B
Even though Microsoft is only the second largest brand in the world, it is hard to dispute that it is a huge company. Microsoft develops software for Windows and many other industries, including gaming. Its recent acquisition of Blizzard for $68.7 billion shows that Microsoft takes things seriously.
Although the revenue data for 2022 ($16.2B) is not as high as the rest, this is likely to change in 2023. The deal with Blizzard took place a few months ago, so it’s only a matter of time before revenues increase. After all, Microsoft is now officially behind titles like World of Warcraft and Overwatch 2–and there are many more in development or production.
In addition to PlayStation, Microsoft has also created Xbox as an attempt to go head to head with Sony’s best-seller. Even though this product doesn’t have as many fans as PlayStation, Microsoft’s recent moves could have a huge impact on the Xbox.
NetEase – $14B
Even though Tencent is the biggest company in the gaming space in China, NetEase is another big name. With a 2022 revenue estimate of $14B, this brand’s revenue is around $13B–almost as much as Microsoft’s.
NetEase is a Chinese gaming company that operates primarily in the online market. The first game the brand produced was Fantasy Westward Journey, which was released in 2001. After that, NetEase created Westward Journey Online II and waited 13 years before developing its next title Lost Light. In addition to Diablo Immortal(a collaboration with Blizzard), NetEase has been responsible for creating Once Human and other games as well. One of its most exciting collaborations is working with Blizzard to hold the official license for Overwatch in China!
In addition to its domestic studios, the Chinese brand also has many big-name studios under its belt worldwide, including Spliced, SkyBox Labs, Jar of Sparks and Quantic Dream.
Nintendo – $14B
Nintendo is one of the most legendary names in the gaming industry, so its 2022 revenue projection of $14B shouldn’t surprise anyone.
The Japanese gaming powerhouse Nintendo was founded in 1889, making it one of the oldest names in gaming. It has gone through many changes over the years, but most people know it for the famous Game Boy consoles, which were extremely popular in the 90s and early 2000s.
In addition to its Game Boy line, Nintendo has created several other devices for gaming. These include the Nintendo DS and Wii as well as the Switch, which has been very popular in recent years.
Nintendo is most well known for its games, many of which are considered classics by gamers of all ages. Some examples include Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, and Super Smash Bros.
Sea – $12.4B
Sea Limited is a gaming company from Singapore. The company was founded under the name Garena in 2009, and DotA fans will remember this name as one of the biggest brands in modern gaming.
Tencent has acquired a portion of the brand and plans to make it even more successful.
In addition to $12.4B in revenues in 2022, Sea owns the Lion City Sailors FC, one of Singapore’s football clubs. It also has other platforms including Shopee, an e-commerce service; and SeaMoney, which focuses on digital payments.
Although Garena+ is newer than Garena’s other platforms, it continues to be the brand’s most successful endeavor and houses several popular games like Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends.
